Movie Night: Land and Freedom

To close our series about „the revolution“, we screen a movie that vividly captures the atmosphere during the Spanish Civil War of 1936/37. In „Land and Freedom“ Ken Loach shows how during this time groups from different left-wing movements from all over the world fought for a social revolution and the abolition of capitalist conditions. This struggle is told in the film through the story of David (a communist from Liverpool), who travels to Spain to join the International Brigades in the fight against fascism. On his way he meets the revolutionary workers‘ party POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista). The film gives an insight into the mood in Barcelona at the time, where workers themselves took over the administration and had discussions about collectivization and ultimately the bloody end of this revolution.

The movie will be screened in Spanish and English with English subtitles.

Zum Abschluss unserer Filmreihe über „die Revolution“ zeigen wir einen Film, der lebhaft die Stimmung während des spanischen Bürgerkriges 1936/37 spürbar macht. In „Land and Freedom“ zeigt Ken Loach, wie in dieser Zeit Gruppen aus verschiedenen linken Strömungen aus der ganzen Welt für eine soziale Revolution und die Abschaffung der kapitalistischen Verhältnisse kämpften. Dieser Kampf wird im Film durch die Geschichte von David (ein Kommunist aus Liverpool), der nach Spanien reist, um sich dort den Internationalen Brigaden im Kampf gegen Faschismus anzuschließen, erzählt. Auf seinem Weg trifft er auf die revolutionäre Arbeiterpartei POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista). Der Film gibt einen Einblick über die Stimmung damals in Barcelona, wo Arbeiter:innen selbst die Verwaltung übernommen haben und Diskussionen über Kollektivierung geführt haben sowie letztenendes über das blutige Ende dieser Revolution.
