Movie Night: Battle of Algiers

The Italien-Algerian film „The Battle of Algiers“ is the first film in our trilogy about colonialism. It shows the brutal fight between the guerrilla fighters of the FLN (National Liberation Front) fighting the French colonisation in Algiers (capital city of Algeria) and the French paratroopers attempting to keep control on the city. The film concentrates on the revolutionary fighter Ali La Pointe (Ali Ammar) during the years between 1954 and 1957.
A subject of sociopolitical controversy in France, the film was not screened in the country for five years, because it was forbidden to show the movie. It was included in 2008 on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s 100 Italian films to be saved.
The screening is in French and Arabic with English subtitles. We will conduct a discussion after the screening.
Le film italo-algérien „La bataille d’Alger“ est le premier film de notre trilogie sur le colonialisme. Il montre la lutte sanglante entre les guérilleros du FLN (Front de libération nationale) qui combattent la colonisation française et les parachutistes français qui tentent de garder le contrôle de la capitale de l’Algérie. Le film se concentre sur le portrait du militant révolutionnaire Ali la Pointe (Ali Ammar) pendant les années 1954 à 1957. En France, le film a fait l’objet d’une telle polémique qu’il a été interdit en salle pendant 5 ans. En 2008, il a été inclus dans la liste des „100 films italiens à sauver“ du ministère italien des Biens culturels.
Le film sera projeté en français et en arabe, et sous-titré en anglais.

الفيلم الإيطالي-الجزائري „معركة الجزائر“ هو أول فيلم في ثلاثيتنا عن الاستعمار. الفيلم يُظهر القتال العنيف بين مقاتلي جبهة التحرير الوطني الذين يقاتلون الاستعمار الفرنسي في الجزائر العاصمة والمظليين الفرنسيين الذين يحاولون الحفاظ على السيطرة الفرنسية على المدينة. يركز الفيلم على المقاتل الثوري علي لابوانت (علي عمار) خلال السنوات بين عامي ١٩٥٤ و١٩٥٧
نظرًا للجدال الاجتماعي والسياسي في فرنسا، لم يُعرض الفيلم هناك لمدة خمس سنوات. وقد أُدرج الفيلم في عام ٢٠٠٨ ضمن قائمة وزارة التراث الثقافي الإيطالية لمائة فيلم إيطالي يجب الحفاظ عليها
